Clothes and Color - How To Look Slimmer, Healthier and Generate Respect

By Kelly Price

The colors you wear can make you instantly look slimmer, leaner, healthier and more appealing. Why because:

We react to color before ANYTHING else, and that’s why it’s so important - We react to color on instinct.

Let’s look at how to use color in your dress to project a better image of yourself to all those you meet.

A response on instinct

We act on instinct to color , and through out history our responses to color have helped us survive.

For example, one of our ancient ancestors is hunting in the Jungle and sees a shape with black stripes prowling around – He doesn’t wait to see the teeth! He immediately sense danger - This is purely the color of the animal that triggers danger Colors what we associate with them

As society has developed it has reinforced our association with certain colors to trigger a response.

Go into a Hospital or dentists, and you will often see pale green or pale yellow because of their soothing, relaxing impact.

Take a road sign, traffic light or warning notice, see red and you know you probably need to be cautious. All the time we everyday of our lives we react to color.

Color and your image

We can of course use the influence of color to our advantage, to create a positive impression.

Understanding what different colors mean to other people, means you can dress to project different images with the correct choice of color.

Consider this:

Around 60% of clothes sold in western countries are black. The reason for this is - Black can be used both formally and informally to great effect.

Wearing black formally suggests elegance, strength, authority, power and control – Think what colors the police use for uniforms and what you already associate it with and you get the picture.

If you have to attend a business meeting or any formal event, black is always a safe color. In Western cultures it gets peoples attention and respect.

When worn properly, you can’t go wrong in black. Dark colors are always more effective in formal situations. Dark grey and navy blue also conjure up a similar image

While red is used many people associate it with confrontation, so it’s not a safe choice for business meeting.

Why does red trigger a negative response? Think of signs that warn you of things i.e. a final demand for a bill or a no smoking or any other sign warning you not to do something! – Many people resent red and don’t like it.

There are of course differences between societies in colors they like and don’t like. A good example is red, which is seen as a very positive color by the Chinese.

Colors to make you look slimmer

Generally the darker the color the slimmer you will appear, no wonder black is so popular

The other trick of using color to look slimmer is to make sure that you dress in one color only.

Why? Because you are not bisecting your figure and you are not drawing attention to any of the problem areas of your body. Colors to enhance your look

For example let’s take someone with a pale complexion. They should not wear many light colors such as yellow and lime green, as this will simply make them look washed out.

Think of hair color as well, or any other feature.

If you are careful in your color selection you can draw attention to your good points and deflect from your bad points.

Other colors

If you want to project a fun image you can use vibrant light colors. In western cultures we present these with fun ( what color are children’s nurseries and colors travel companies use a lot? ) yellow’s orange, blues, greens – All these in our psyche represent having a good time.

Color consultations

Are big business now, as more people than ever are looking to use color to project a better image – Be it they want to look slimmer, emphasize their best features or command respect.

Light the essence of life itself and is reflected in the colors we see - This is why its effect is so dramatic on all of us and why using color is so effective in our dress.

Keys To Starting Your Own Clothing Company

By Bradley Johnson

Ever wanted to start your own clothing company? Its not as difficult as you think. What do you absolutely need?

1. A decent logo
2. Creative concepts and graphics - Design Talent
3. A unique, blank apparel supplier
4. A decent screen printer
5. A Line Sheet to show potential buyers
6. Sales and promotional talent.

Which do you think is most important? It's obviously design talent you say? Are you joking? You must be joking. Have you stepped out of the house recently? Have you seen Von Dutch clothing? Crayon weilding Chimpanzes produce better designs. Furthermore, I imagine the monkeys are more sanitary, but I digress.

#6 is clearly the most important element. You can create an entire line of fashion forward, beautiful clothing but if you can't pitch it - no one will ever see it (excluding your mom of course). So, unless you want a closet full of your fantastic designs, ask yourself the following two questions:

Can I sell?

In other words...can I hit the pavement with my line sheet and walk into every boutique clothing store I can find? Then will I harass the hell out of retail clothing store buyers so that they'll try to squeeze 5 minutes of time in for me at Magic 06' (Clothing Convention) ?

Will I be able to make a professional presentation to a Nordstroms buyer?

Can I promote?

Do I have and creative viral or gureilla marketing ideas to get this label kickstarted?

If the answer to both of these questions is No - you better get some help. Namely, find someone passionate for fashion who also happens to be ridiculously outgoing, great on the phone and aggressive as hell. Lastly, (and superficially) it would help if your sales rep is hot.

I know, how horrible...so sorry, buy I didn't say anything about this being an equal opportunity business.

That being said, let me welcome you the shallow end of the pool... i.e. the fashion world.

Good luck with your label!

Clothes Do Make The Man

By Brian Grinonneau

If you're a professional, look like it. "Business casual" is slouching. Sharply pressed khaki's with a white, starched cotton button-down, have become wrinkled cargo pants and a collarless shirt. Why would you dress like that to see customers? Is it Halloween? Are you spending the day hiking with them?

Golf shirts have become standard work wear. If you're wearing one, you ought to be teeing it up. There are legions of middle managers, business owners and other professionals who have no idea what Egyptian broadcloth is, much less how it feels.

Casual dress is casual business. If you don't take yourself seriously, why should anyone else? If you're better dressed, you're better regarded. Make the right impression the first time. A salesman in a crisp shirt, silk tie and polished shoes scores first and probably gets the business. He looks like he deserves it. Perception is reality.

Dressing up isn't uncomfortable. Jeans and a casual shirt are comfortable. Fine wool pants and a cotton shirt are heaven. Look good, feel good--God love the modern day textile business.

Clothes do make the man. Wear a suit. Put on a tie. Get a shirt or two with French cuffs. Look every bit the professional you are.

Brian Grinonneau is the general manager of McMann & Tate Advertising a midwest agency that insists its clients tell their story like it has never been told before.

A Closet Full of Clothes but Nothing to Wear

By Janice Wee

When you get ready for a dinner, or to go out with your friends do you spend hours in front of the wardrobe searching for something to wear?

Is your closet brimming with clothes yet somehow, you still have nothing suitable for the occasion?

You are not alone. It simply means that it is time to reorganize your wardrobe.

Put it simply, what you don't see, you probably wouldn't wear. Chances are, the perfect outfit for the occasion is hiding somewhere in your closet. You just don't see it. Looking for it is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

First, prepare yourself to be brutal. Set aside an entire afternoon (or day) for your wardrobe spring cleaning. (or winter cleaning, whatever)

Keep only what you will wear and throw out everything else. I mean it.

First, go through everything to see if it still fits you. If the item fits, put it in the keep pile. If it doesn't, put it in the discard pile.

Now go through the keep pile. Is anything there really out of fashion? Don't wait for it to get back in fashion. If that look every comes back, you can buy a new, more updated version. Put all these outdated item in the discard pile.

If you are broke, you can sell the items in the discard pile on ebay. If you want help the needy, you could donate the clothes to a worthy charity. If you like second hand clothes, you could hold a clothes swap session where you exchange these clothes with your pals for something you would probablly wear.

Now that you have significantly pared down your keep pile, time to sort it out. What are the items not appropriate for the current season. Fold these up nicely and store them in drawers lined with scented paper so they will smell fresh when the season is right for them.

Iron the clothes you have left in your keep pile. Sort them by type of clothing and color and prepare to keep them in your closet. Do the same for your bags, shoes and the rest of your accessories.

Organize your wardrobe. Make it really easy to find what you want at a glance. Get some closet organizers to help you make full use of the space of your wardrobe and to organize your stuff so you know where to find what you want when you want it.

Pack your keep clothes and accessories back into the closet, sorted by color, type and function so you can find what you want at a glance.

Take stock of your wardrobe. Do you really have nothing to wear?

Look at your daily schedule. Do you have clothes that will carry you through all the events in your daily schedules? Write down the events that you really don't have anything to wear to.

Look through your appointments. Do you have something to wear for every one of these appointments? For every one of these functions? Take note of the functions or appointments which you need to buy clothes for.

Now go through all the events where you probably would not have anything to wear. What are the items that could take you through these events? List them down. Then go and shop for them.
