Cowboy Fashion Do's

By Jason Murphy

Technically speaking, all Stetson Company hats can be branded as a Stetson. However, American popular culture has created for us the image of a Stetson hat as the classic cowboy hat. Cowboy hats are distinguished as having wide brims and high, distinctly-shaped crowns. Straw, fur, and wool felt are the common materials used for making these hats. Straw, aside from being cheaper, is the best hat for during hot weather. However, age and long wear might cause it to become brittle. For durability, fur felt hats of either beaver or rabbit are best though more expensive. If you think that you can put on any cowboy hat and it will do, you might be surprised that there are fashion do's and dont's when it comes to wearing one.

Banish the thought that real cowboys only wear one hat. Real cowboys have several cowboy hats and other than function, they have other reasons. First, straw and hats of light color are fashionable and must be worn only in the summer or dry seasons. This is because they are airy, breathable, and as your science teacher always says, light colors absorb less heat. Second, the season for dark colored and felt hat is during the colder months. Aside from protecting the head against the bitter weather, these hats also absorb more heat, thereby keeping the cowboy warm. Though no clear reason is given why, white hats are no-no after the celebration of Labor day. You might just be branded as a fashion flop if you do so.

Okay you got your hat and you know how to wear one, but still, it's not enough to project a cowboy image. Cowboys follow certain etiquette when wearing hats, and you would do yourself a good deed to do as they do. Cowboy hats are not worn indoors except in public places that are enclosed and large (malls, square dance halls). Like all other hats, take it off when seated at a table, especially during meals. Wearing it while dining gives the impolite impression that you're in a hurry to finish eating and leave. A big no is wearing it inside Churches. If you feel like wearing it in a church, by all means attend service at a Cowboy Church.

Cowboys pay respect to ladies. Doff your hat to passing ladies by way of greeting and respect. Don't exclude men in uniform either. Church officials are also rendered the same courtesy. To do this properly, bow your head slightly at an angle and hold your hat by its crown. Lift it slightly as if taking it off, pause, and place it back. During services that require standing for a period of time (flag ceremonies, mass) hold your hat by its crown at chest level as if in a semi-hug. Now that you've learned your hat basics and etiquette, brush your cowboy hats and head out. The town needs you partner.

Color and You and Your Wardrobe

By Carmel Baird

When you are sewing for yourself, selecting fabric is so important and selecting the colors to suit you is even more important.

Not all of us can afford to have our colors done, but you can experiment with this.

When in a fabric store, take a bolt of fabric to a mirror, put it up to your face, more across at your shoulder. take note of how it affects your skin tone and take particular note of your eyes.

If it is your color, your skin should look a very good color, you will look healthy and your eyes bright and alive. If it is not your color, the the 'color' will drain from your face and your eyes will look tired and dull.

You can do this with what you have in your wardrobe right now.

All colors have undertones, and the color experts have classified them for fashion as "warm" and "cool" or the latest "silver" and "gold"

To determine if you are a silver or a gold, place the metals one at a time against your skin and see which is the brightest, that brightest one will be you.

If you like a particular color and you don't think it fall into your colors, this may not be true, you may still be able to wear it.

Most colors have an undertone, these undertones are what determines whether the color is "yours" or not.

Colors have a warm undertone or a cool undertone. If you want to wear that color you love, then find the fabric that has your "undertone" and this you will see by "laying" the fabric on you, by that I mean, draping across you and seeing the result, if your skin takes on a healthy glow, then that is for you, if it makes your skin look sallow and dull, then leave it where it is.

You will have a "power" color too. The power colors are mainly black, navy, grey and brown. One of these colors will suit you better than the others, The one you always feel good in, and makes your skin tone and eyes bright and healthy. Many people think black is the all powerful color, not so, if it doesn't suit you it will have the opposite effect.

So try navy or brown, once again if the color drains from your face, don't wear it.

Once you have established your power color, when you really want to make a statement, go for that job interview, wear POWER.

If you can afford to have your colors done, then I would suggest you do just that. Knowing you are wearing what suits you, will give you confidence beyond anything you have known before.

I'm not sure if they are still doing it, but Gract Cosmetics have fully trained color consultants and while this is not a plug for Grace Cosmetics, I do know they used to do party plan makeovers. Not sure but you could check out your phone book to see if you have a Grace consultant in your area. A party like that can be a lot of fun too, for you and your friends,

The color consultants are listed in the yellow pages too.

Have some fun finding your colors, watch your confidence grow.

Collecting Art - Do You Have The Bottle

By Henry Bateman

The headline reads “Undiscovered master piece sells for millions at Auction”. The family was overjoyed to discover that a picture that had hung on their grandfather’s wall for years attracted a six figure price at auction. Grandson and heir said “The whole family knew he collected odds and ends but we never envisaged it would amount to anything.”

OK the above is fiction, but it’s what’s at the back of the majority of collector’s minds, especially those who collect art. Buy it cheap and sell it for squillions. Just don’t rely on it as your retirement fund. In many respects it is a lottery, your betting your collection decision against that fickle beast, public opinion. The beauty of the art collecting lottery is you can hang the ticket on your wall for all your friends to admire.

Now that can be scary, you’re opening yourself up to ridicule because 90 out of 100 people know damn all about art. If it isn’t chocolate box pretty it isn’t art, right. Wrong, have a look at the masters of art in your local museum or better still here on the internet and see how many pretty pictures you can find. Look at Picasso, Gauguin, Pollock, Matisse, Cezanne or Van Gogh to mention a few.

It’s OK, I’ll wait.

Not much prettiness there. What is there is life, both the depiction of it and in the picture itself. There is an energy that radiates from art and if you allow it that energy will take you places you have never been before. But be prepared, it will confront you, it will challenge you, it is opinionated and isn’t afraid to speak its mind, it is prepared to stand up and be counted, it is art.

As such it is in the vanguard of human experience, it is raw, it is fresh and new. It isn’t the tried and true of recipes of yesterday rehashed, it is pushing the boundaries. In the 21st Century it is computer generated art in all of its many and varied forms. Be it fractal art, manipulated photography or cartoon cells, the collectable artists of today are using a keyboard and a mouse. If Michelangelo were to paint the Sistine Chapel today you can bet London to a brick he wouldn’t be using intonaco. Now as then he would be using that latest technology available to him.

For the collector this just adds another level of complexity. Because computer art is so easily reproduced, what does one actually collect? As in the past, collect signatures, preferably from a limited edition. Obviously, the shorter the edition the better. If an open edition with a signature is all you can afford, go for it, it is better than a poster with or with out a digital signature. If your print isn’t signed by the fair hand of the artist, as a collectable, it is worthless and that includes digital signatures. It is a $29.99 commodity and barely worth the paper it’s printed on. Although the frame may attract a bid or two.

If you consequently come across your print on the cover of Vogue or in a TV commercial for whatever, chances are you’re on a winner. That is the paperback of your signed first edition. Assuming of course your print has staying power, for so much of the mass media is based on ephemera. It is the quick hit that attracts attention and while this can be true of art there is a deeper relationship just waiting for your attention in works that can stand the test of time.

For anyone seriously considering collecting art, the pieces to acquire are those you can live with. If you like it from the start that is a bonus though not essential because if you have chosen wisely you will, over time and many conversations, come to love your new found friend. Works of art do become trusted friends and when it comes time to dispose of them it is a gut wrenching experience. This I know for I have been there and done that. When I had to dispose of my collection a few months ago my main concern was that they were going to good home rather than the financial return they could afford me. Consequently the ROI was less than if I had been less sentimental.

Though if ROI is your motivation and you can be hard nosed at the end of the day you will have many hours of enjoyment from your friends upon your walls along the way.

Start An Art Collectible Hobby And Beautify Your Home

By Rose Hillbrand

Collecting is a fun hobby, and one of the most interesting things to collect are art collectibles. Many different items can be painted with artwork and become an art collectible. Hobby enthusiasts collect such things as saw blades, and wooden eggs which have had artwork painted on. People even collect designer rugs as art. Another art collectible hobby is collecting limited edition plates, thimbles, Christmas ornaments, and figurines produced by such companies as Bradford Exchange. And of course, many people collect fine art paintings.

The person with an art collectible hobby will probably find his or her own favorite artists whose works they appreciate. They can choose to focus on one particular artist, either past or present, or they can choose from the works of many artists. On the other hand, they may collect art and art objects around a theme they enjoy, such as cigars, wild animals, or piano music.

One may think of an art collector as a rich person who has the money to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an original Van Gogh. A person of more modest means can collect art too, however. Post cards are a good place to start. Most art museum gift shops offer high quality, glossy postcards printed with some of their more notable acquisitions. By buying those cards one really appreciates, anyone can have an art collection.

Ebay is a good source of art collectibles whatever type of art or collectible you fancy. In fact, if you are just starting out, the choices and options can be overwhelming! Just remember that you can sell your own belongings as well as buying those of others. This should make the impact on the budget a little less powerful. Other ideas for inexpensively collecting art collectibles are scouring flea markets, thrift shops, and garage sales. You never know what treasure someone else may be getting rid of.

One nice thing about art collectibles is that artists can be found in every part of the world. The art collector should scout the local art shows, museums, and artist's hangouts to find out just what sort of talent can be had less expensively and close to home. Because of the local flavor of some artwork, art collectibles make good travel souvenirs. For instance, the artist Linda Barnicott specializes in paintings of scenes, buildings, and landmarks found around Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Similarly, collectors can find local artist almost everywhere.

An art collectible hobby will keep you interested in life and give you a home filled with art masterpieces as well. If you enjoy pretty and interesting things around you, consider starting an art collectible hobby today.

A Clothing Optional Vacation - Give A Unique Father's Day Gift

By Tom Mulhall

If your husband is like most men, he is the hardest person to buy gifts for. How many new ties, power tools, or bottles of liquor does he really need? Here's a great idea for a gift this Father's Day - a vacation at a clothing optional resort.

Sound far fetched? Not really. Nude recreation is the fastest growing segment of the travel industry. It is a booming travel niche with over $400 million in annual revenues reported by USA Today newspaper. In a recent Roper poll, 25% of Americans have gone skinny dipping in mixed company. You may have already done this when you were young. Now is the time to recapture that lost freedom of your youth.

Traditionally, Americans had to go to Europe or the Caribbean to find upscale topless, nudist, or naturist resorts. In the U.S., most nude places were just rustic campgrounds, the old style "nudist colonies" that movies like the Pink Panther showed. But, in the last decade, the U.S. has now surpassed the rest of the world and has some of the finest clothing optional resorts around.

American clothing optional resorts cater to different customers. Many are still the rustic campgrounds where families with their kids go on the weekends. However, in Florida and Palm Springs, California, you will now find nudist resorts that are able to compete with the best regular 4 and 5 star resorts. Nudism in America has now grown up and some of these new resorts are considered the best in the world.

One of the most popular of these new upscale nude resorts is The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa. It is very popular as it was the first upscale boutique clothing optional resort to cater just to couples. So, leave the kids with the grandparents or baby sitter an be prepared to be spoiled and pampered. The press reports it is the most mainstream nudist resort in the U.S. It is truly clothing optional. Although, repeat guests go there to go nude sunbathing, sometimes "first timers" are nervous and need some time to ease into nude sunbathing. The Terra Cotta Inn is perfect for couples trying nude sunbathing for the first time. There is never any pressure. Guests go nude as soon as they feel comfortable. And everyone always feels comfortable as 99% of the guests go nude sunbathing. The Terra Cotta Inn is located in sunny Palm Springs, California. http://palmsprings.com This beautiful resort community averages 340 days of sunshine a year and is the sunniest city in America. It has world championship golf, casinos, shopping, theater, and more. Everything anyone could ask for on their vacation.

Who takes clothing optional vacations? Everyone! People have been nude sunbathing for centuries. Even one of our founding fathers, Ben Franklin was a major advocate of nude sunbathing. Now that some nude resorts have gone upscale, more and more people are discovering the fun of nude recreation. Nude sunbathers range from their 20's to 70's in age. They are teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, police, firefighters, movie stars, Democrats and Republicans, etc. They are everyone. What they all have in common is they wanted to try something new. They were tired of the same old boring, stuffy vacations at chain hotels, They wanted to experience something different. Nude recreation is perfect. It is a great way to add excitement to a marriage or relationship. It is very romantic. Everyone feels comfortable at clothing optional resorts because guests are screened first and everyone knows that they are not wild, orgy places. Romantic? Absolutely! But, everyone always behaves themselves around others. So it is a very safe environment for couples. And once you have stayed at a clothing optional resort, you are hooked for life. For instance, a recent TV Travel show called "Ultimate Hotels" just reported that one clothing optional resort averages just over 75% repeat guests which is one the highest repeat guest rates in the travel industry.

Why go to a clothing optional resort? You go to relax and have fun. Marie Claire Magazine in an article about nudity and body image sent a reporter to a clothing optional resort. She reported, "After a hours of lounging and chatting, I started to feel totally relaxed with both myself and my new environment... As the weekend progressed, I became more and more comfortable being naked and I sure didn't miss the pressure of picking out something to wear every morning! But most of all, I found myself feeling less critical about my body. In fact, since it was clear nobody there cared about body size, I found myself being less self-critical overall- and naturally more health-conscious." And you will have so much fun. At many of the best clothing optional resorts, you get to meet vacationers from around the world. Many life long friendships are started up from guests chatting with each other. Without wearing clothes, people are just naturally more free and friendly.

So this Father's Day, or any day for that matter, if you are looking for a new vacation experience, contact a clothing optional resort and make your next vacation a fun, nude vacation

Clothes and Color - How To Look Slimmer, Healthier and Generate Respect

By Kelly Price

The colors you wear can make you instantly look slimmer, leaner, healthier and more appealing. Why because:

We react to color before ANYTHING else, and that’s why it’s so important - We react to color on instinct.

Let’s look at how to use color in your dress to project a better image of yourself to all those you meet.

A response on instinct

We act on instinct to color , and through out history our responses to color have helped us survive.

For example, one of our ancient ancestors is hunting in the Jungle and sees a shape with black stripes prowling around – He doesn’t wait to see the teeth! He immediately sense danger - This is purely the color of the animal that triggers danger Colors what we associate with them

As society has developed it has reinforced our association with certain colors to trigger a response.

Go into a Hospital or dentists, and you will often see pale green or pale yellow because of their soothing, relaxing impact.

Take a road sign, traffic light or warning notice, see red and you know you probably need to be cautious. All the time we everyday of our lives we react to color.

Color and your image

We can of course use the influence of color to our advantage, to create a positive impression.

Understanding what different colors mean to other people, means you can dress to project different images with the correct choice of color.

Consider this:

Around 60% of clothes sold in western countries are black. The reason for this is - Black can be used both formally and informally to great effect.

Wearing black formally suggests elegance, strength, authority, power and control – Think what colors the police use for uniforms and what you already associate it with and you get the picture.

If you have to attend a business meeting or any formal event, black is always a safe color. In Western cultures it gets peoples attention and respect.

When worn properly, you can’t go wrong in black. Dark colors are always more effective in formal situations. Dark grey and navy blue also conjure up a similar image

While red is used many people associate it with confrontation, so it’s not a safe choice for business meeting.

Why does red trigger a negative response? Think of signs that warn you of things i.e. a final demand for a bill or a no smoking or any other sign warning you not to do something! – Many people resent red and don’t like it.

There are of course differences between societies in colors they like and don’t like. A good example is red, which is seen as a very positive color by the Chinese.

Colors to make you look slimmer

Generally the darker the color the slimmer you will appear, no wonder black is so popular

The other trick of using color to look slimmer is to make sure that you dress in one color only.

Why? Because you are not bisecting your figure and you are not drawing attention to any of the problem areas of your body. Colors to enhance your look

For example let’s take someone with a pale complexion. They should not wear many light colors such as yellow and lime green, as this will simply make them look washed out.

Think of hair color as well, or any other feature.

If you are careful in your color selection you can draw attention to your good points and deflect from your bad points.

Other colors

If you want to project a fun image you can use vibrant light colors. In western cultures we present these with fun ( what color are children’s nurseries and colors travel companies use a lot? ) yellow’s orange, blues, greens – All these in our psyche represent having a good time.

Color consultations

Are big business now, as more people than ever are looking to use color to project a better image – Be it they want to look slimmer, emphasize their best features or command respect.

Light the essence of life itself and is reflected in the colors we see - This is why its effect is so dramatic on all of us and why using color is so effective in our dress.

Keys To Starting Your Own Clothing Company

By Bradley Johnson

Ever wanted to start your own clothing company? Its not as difficult as you think. What do you absolutely need?

1. A decent logo
2. Creative concepts and graphics - Design Talent
3. A unique, blank apparel supplier
4. A decent screen printer
5. A Line Sheet to show potential buyers
6. Sales and promotional talent.

Which do you think is most important? It's obviously design talent you say? Are you joking? You must be joking. Have you stepped out of the house recently? Have you seen Von Dutch clothing? Crayon weilding Chimpanzes produce better designs. Furthermore, I imagine the monkeys are more sanitary, but I digress.

#6 is clearly the most important element. You can create an entire line of fashion forward, beautiful clothing but if you can't pitch it - no one will ever see it (excluding your mom of course). So, unless you want a closet full of your fantastic designs, ask yourself the following two questions:

Can I sell?

In other words...can I hit the pavement with my line sheet and walk into every boutique clothing store I can find? Then will I harass the hell out of retail clothing store buyers so that they'll try to squeeze 5 minutes of time in for me at Magic 06' (Clothing Convention) ?

Will I be able to make a professional presentation to a Nordstroms buyer?

Can I promote?

Do I have and creative viral or gureilla marketing ideas to get this label kickstarted?

If the answer to both of these questions is No - you better get some help. Namely, find someone passionate for fashion who also happens to be ridiculously outgoing, great on the phone and aggressive as hell. Lastly, (and superficially) it would help if your sales rep is hot.

I know, how horrible...so sorry, buy I didn't say anything about this being an equal opportunity business.

That being said, let me welcome you the shallow end of the pool... i.e. the fashion world.

Good luck with your label!

Clothes Do Make The Man

By Brian Grinonneau

If you're a professional, look like it. "Business casual" is slouching. Sharply pressed khaki's with a white, starched cotton button-down, have become wrinkled cargo pants and a collarless shirt. Why would you dress like that to see customers? Is it Halloween? Are you spending the day hiking with them?

Golf shirts have become standard work wear. If you're wearing one, you ought to be teeing it up. There are legions of middle managers, business owners and other professionals who have no idea what Egyptian broadcloth is, much less how it feels.

Casual dress is casual business. If you don't take yourself seriously, why should anyone else? If you're better dressed, you're better regarded. Make the right impression the first time. A salesman in a crisp shirt, silk tie and polished shoes scores first and probably gets the business. He looks like he deserves it. Perception is reality.

Dressing up isn't uncomfortable. Jeans and a casual shirt are comfortable. Fine wool pants and a cotton shirt are heaven. Look good, feel good--God love the modern day textile business.

Clothes do make the man. Wear a suit. Put on a tie. Get a shirt or two with French cuffs. Look every bit the professional you are.

Brian Grinonneau is the general manager of McMann & Tate Advertising a midwest agency that insists its clients tell their story like it has never been told before.

A Closet Full of Clothes but Nothing to Wear

By Janice Wee

When you get ready for a dinner, or to go out with your friends do you spend hours in front of the wardrobe searching for something to wear?

Is your closet brimming with clothes yet somehow, you still have nothing suitable for the occasion?

You are not alone. It simply means that it is time to reorganize your wardrobe.

Put it simply, what you don't see, you probably wouldn't wear. Chances are, the perfect outfit for the occasion is hiding somewhere in your closet. You just don't see it. Looking for it is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

First, prepare yourself to be brutal. Set aside an entire afternoon (or day) for your wardrobe spring cleaning. (or winter cleaning, whatever)

Keep only what you will wear and throw out everything else. I mean it.

First, go through everything to see if it still fits you. If the item fits, put it in the keep pile. If it doesn't, put it in the discard pile.

Now go through the keep pile. Is anything there really out of fashion? Don't wait for it to get back in fashion. If that look every comes back, you can buy a new, more updated version. Put all these outdated item in the discard pile.

If you are broke, you can sell the items in the discard pile on ebay. If you want help the needy, you could donate the clothes to a worthy charity. If you like second hand clothes, you could hold a clothes swap session where you exchange these clothes with your pals for something you would probablly wear.

Now that you have significantly pared down your keep pile, time to sort it out. What are the items not appropriate for the current season. Fold these up nicely and store them in drawers lined with scented paper so they will smell fresh when the season is right for them.

Iron the clothes you have left in your keep pile. Sort them by type of clothing and color and prepare to keep them in your closet. Do the same for your bags, shoes and the rest of your accessories.

Organize your wardrobe. Make it really easy to find what you want at a glance. Get some closet organizers to help you make full use of the space of your wardrobe and to organize your stuff so you know where to find what you want when you want it.

Pack your keep clothes and accessories back into the closet, sorted by color, type and function so you can find what you want at a glance.

Take stock of your wardrobe. Do you really have nothing to wear?

Look at your daily schedule. Do you have clothes that will carry you through all the events in your daily schedules? Write down the events that you really don't have anything to wear to.

Look through your appointments. Do you have something to wear for every one of these appointments? For every one of these functions? Take note of the functions or appointments which you need to buy clothes for.

Now go through all the events where you probably would not have anything to wear. What are the items that could take you through these events? List them down. Then go and shop for them.

You can find the clothes you really need at http://www.buyclothing.net and some gorgeous shoes at http://www.shoes-mall.net.

By Clark Hunter

Calvin Klein man underwear has long been popular because it fits well, looks good, and is a name brand that most men trust. While many men do not put very much thought into their underwear, Calvin Klein man underwear has made such a statement that many men will only wear this brand in certain styles. Changing Your Mans Underwear And Getting Away With It

By Huw Hopkin

Most men hate buying their own underwear. Single men tend to whiz into big departmental stores, grabbing the 3-pack underwear that are dyed in the dullest colors, hoping that the lady at the checkout counter is not young and pretty. When they have got a girlfriend or wife, the task is almost immediately delegated quickly to her. After all, she is the only one who sees.

But what happens underneath those clothes is very important to the women, which is why www.VeryYummy.com have put together some tips for women on how to choose the best underwear. The tips involve three simple steps which involves, firstly, working out what kind of guy you have, choosing the type of underwear and lastly, getting sufficient quantities the new style into the man’s drawer before explaining yourself.

First Step – What kind of man you are dealing with.
The first step involves working out what kind of man you have. Try using the following guide:

Ubermale – This guy is so concerned with his looks that he will take care of his own underwear and you can be sure that you can trust that it will look good on him. It is best to make sure that he does not end up out-dressing you in the underwear department. The best thing for this guy is to hand him a mens g-string so he can admire his own buttocks in a mirror.

Metrosexual man – He owns at least some form of facial cream and does enjoy shopping. It would be normal to see this guy wearing something from Zara or American Apparel. Trunks are the thing for this kind of man. He will be well aware that Calvin Klein have great looking trunks.

Family man – Spends most of his time with babies climbing all over him. Therefore something comfortable and easy are important like briefs. By the time he crawls into bed after putting the baby to sleep you won’t notice what he has on anyway.

Lad – This guy is busy down the local bar watching football, humming to songs as he showers in the football changing room. Best advice is too get him something that will not embarrass his mates at the club. Good old fashioned boxers are perfect for him and you can even choose to vary the material by buying something silkier.

Second step – Ordering
A man will normally wear one pair of underwear for as long as possible without changing. It is pretty disgusting, therefore women should make sure he changes it and has at least 14 days worth of underwear supply. This way you can make sure he will get around to his washing every two weeks. However, if you want to make sure he washes his underwear more often, the solution is obvious, buy less underwear. A friend once bought a single three pack only.

Step three - Making the switch
Now, tips on how to get rid of the old designs. The fastest way to is to use the direct approach. Dump the underwear in the trash on a garbage day. You really don’t want him rummaging in the trash can looking for them while cursing at you. Make sure his new underwear is placed exactly where the old ones would have been. If the colors match, the change in underwear type might even go unnoticed for a few days if you’re lucky.

Step four – Explaining yourself
When your man asks where his favorite underwear disappeared to, you can choose your how you want to explain the truth. It is easy to say the washing machine chewed it up or go straight for the cliché, “I prefer you without them” and them head for the hot rumble that follows, helping him get over the fact his favorite y-fronts have gone.

Producing Canvas Art Prints

By Juan José

A very recent technology allows for artists’ original paintings to be replicated on canvas. Prior to this an artist who painted an original work on canvas would have to have a reproduction made on paper. Unlike a paper reproduction, one printed on canvas can be displayed without glass and matting, and also looks like an original.

There are two main ways that person can produce canvas prints. They are by canvas transferring and printing directly on the canvas. Both can produce high-quality results, and can be made to look as close to the original as possible.

When it comes to reproducing an artist’s original canvas art prints, it is obvious that the reproduction should look as much like the original as possible. By using several techniques, it makes it easy to produce canvas art prints that look just as good as the original.

Transferring to make canvas art prints is the most common of the two techniques. It begins with a standard, offset paper print that is made in the traditional way from the original. The print is then coated with a series of special chemicals that are designed to allow the paper and the ink to separate from each other. That means when the paper is removed, the ink remains.

The canvass is then prepped with adhesive, and the film is carefully laid on it. Pressure is applied to bond the film to the canvas, which is then set aside to dry. The result is a beautiful canvas art print that looks very much like the original.

Printing directly on the canvas to produce canvas art prints is the second most commonly used method.

Other methods used consist of direct offset printing, where a piece of canvas is run through an offset press; Repligraphy, where a hot-melt color dye printing system is used to create an oil-based film that adheres to the canvas; and Artagraphs, which features a mold of both the artist’s original brushstrokes and textures.

How can you tell if a piece of art is the original or a canvas art print reproduction? Although it may seem hard, there are clues that someone can use to tell what is real and what is a copy.

The first is to look for limited edition print numbers, which are normally found at the bottom of the work in xx/yy format. When producing canvas art prints, a reproduction often leaves this out.

Canvas art prints are usually completely flat or have small applications of hand-applied paint that is referred to as highlight. If the canvas art print is flat to the touch, then it’s probably a reproduction. Originals mostly include areas of texture.

Highlights can be obvious to see. A hightlight can be simply a small dab of paint, which is quite different from an artist’s actual brushstroke.

Other options include using a high-powered microscope to look for standard dot patterns and/or calling a gallery to see if they have someone who can identify your canvas art print as an original or a reproduction.

Getting Fashion Tips from Celebrity Fashion

By Clark Hunter

Celebrity fashion is something that we all pay attention to, whether we realize it or not. We all check out the magazines at the grocery store checkout and we all take notice of what is in the windows of our favorite clothing stores in the malls and what models and celebrities are wearing on television. Celebrity fashion paves the way for every day people to develop a style all their own, and even to stay on top of the trends. Unlike most of us, celebrities have fashion advisors that can tell them what is hot and what is not, and most of them listen! All we have to do is follow the cue of most celebrities and we can be just as trendy and as hip as they are.

Hair - Every year there are new hair styles that celebrities make popular. Jennifer Aniston is one of the most popular as we have all been mimicking her beautiful hair for the last fifteen years or so since she was better known as Rachel. In 2005 most of the hairstyles were straight and those that didn't have the straight locks got them by using sedu hair straighteners. The sedu hair straightener is a ceramic device that can straighten one's hair without damaging it. Jennifer Aniston, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Paris Hilton have sported these hairstyles. Though it would be easy to assume that all of these celebrities have beautiful hair that is straight, all of them wear these fashions with the help of the sedu style straightener.

Accessories - Accessories are another fashion cue that we often take from celebrities. For a long time personalized necklaces were the thing, but now simple is better. Simple diamond necklaces are really popular, as are the "o" pendants and three stone diamond pendants. Simple and elegant are the jewels that will be worn in the form of necklaces, but rings and bracelets are becoming more and chunkier when you look at what your favorite celebrities are wearing right now. Big bags and small bags, there don't seem to be much in between. Big bags and small bags are the extremes that are in right now and everyone seems to be doing the sequined purses and belts, which can dress up a pair of jeans or make a more formal outfit flashier. Leg warmers! Leg warmers are back, although not everyone can pull these 80s fashion accessories back, but you may just see some of your favorite celebrities sporting them in those candid shots that we all love so much!

Shoes - We get many of our cues for shoes from celebrity fashion plates as well. It doesn't seem to matter what season we are in; we are all flipping through magazines to see what the stars are wearing. Again, the stars have advisors to tell them what is hot, but we can simply buy a two or three dollar magazine and check in with our favorite stars. Casual definitely seems to be in right now with our favorite celebrities sporting fashions such as flip-flops for the spring and summer! Many celebrity fashion gurus say you needn't go any further than Payless to get some great shoes. Payless shoes was even mentioned as being a great place to buy shoes on a recent episode of America's Next Top Model.

Clothes - You'll typically find that celebrity fashion isn't unlike what you or I would wear on an every day basis. Jeans, t-shirts, they're all the rage. Bootleg jeans and capris are in again this year as well as low rise and super lose rise jeans, and you'll definitely see your favorite stars wearing them in the magazines. Tank tops and peasant tops will be in again, as well as lacy tops. If you're looking for something to wear to the beach, remember that the bikini is in! It's important to remember that you don't have to spend as much as the stars do to copy celebrity fashion. While they may be able to afford to spend $500 on a pair of jeans, you can spend much, much less and create the same look!

Celebrity fashion is always changing. From month to month and season to season what is in definitely changes. While celebrity fashion is interesting, it should be used only as a guide to help you develop your own sense of style. You'll see stars such as Demi Moore and Sharon Stone that always have their own celebrity fashion and they don't really care what other people think. You can look at what the stars are wearing and take what you like and leave what you don't. Either way, the magazines and television shows are a great guide for you to learn what is popular right now and what is not, what you do with it is up to you!

How To Buy Art Online

By David Waddleton

Just a few years ago it seemed people thought the idea of purchasing “clothing” through the internet was absurd. How would you know if it fits? What if it doesn’t fit? What if my credit card number gets stolen? Those were just a few of the many questions I personally had five or so years ago. Hopefully this article will help enlighten some of your inquiries.

The internet has significantly changed the art market. Significantly, meaning people now have choices at their fingertips. The sometimes intimidating and cold art galleries, is now an option. With many art websites offering money back guarantees, secure shopping and customer support, people do not have to feel as though purchasing anything off the site is Russian roulette.

Here are some hints and tips I feel might be useful:

Search and Search Some More: Without the hassles of walking/driving from one gallery to another and limiting gallery hours you have more time at your disposal to do your research. You will have the ability to view hundreds of artworks within the average time someone will be able to see a dozen by actually going to a gallery. For me that means a greater chance to find a new painting I will fall in love with.

Take your Time: Yes buying off the internet is far from perfect so follow your heart and take your time. Send the image to your friends, research the artist and take advantage of the many gallery website features available at your disposal, such as “view-to-scale, background colors, zoom, etc”. Ask questions if you want by emailing the website and also you can compare shop. Remember if you like one artwork and its too expensive for your taste or pocketbook there is surely another painting that is similar and can fit your budget.

Protect Yourself: Read up on the website. Find out how long its been in business. See if the website provides secure shopping and secured online purchases. Read about what the customers and any articles have to say about the website and its artists. Check if the artwork will come with an authentication that you feel comfortable with and find out if they have a return policy that you find reasonable. When you have done your homework, buy the artwork and enjoy your new artwork purchased through the future of art shopping with confidence.

How To Start Your Own Art Collection On A Budget

By Sintilia Miecevole

It is amazing how the art world seems to have taken a hold of general society. Many more individuals are inclined to forgo reprints and posters and start collecting their own unique art pieces for their homes and offices.

Are you interested in starting your own collection of original art? If you do not have thousands of dollars to spend on famous original artwork then you may wish to consider some other ideas and sources for your art pieces.

One avenue to consider, especially if you have not spent much time cultivating your tastes, is to rent art from a local gallery. You can have an original piece from local artists for a fraction of the cost of purchase. You can also trade in your selection for new pieces which may be refreshing in a business environment, or even a smart way to select art for personal enjoyment if you are not sure which pieces will suit you long term.

Another avenue is to go to local art schools or check your paper for shows by student artists. Here you can buy original pieces by up-and-coming artists for much less than established artists. It also allows you to invest in the growth of local talent, and possibly make an investment that will appreciate enormously in value should the artist truly excel in their field.

If you have an artist's community in your area - studios that are rented by local artists, you may also find that they hold open houses during the year. You may find artwork on sale as they promote themselves through this avenue. It also gives you a chance to speak with the artist and get a real history on the work you select.

Often art collectors are interested as much in the career of the artist as they are in their work. Finding an artist that moves you may cause you to consider collecting from a single artist rather than creating a diverse collection. Following the career of a new artist may give you a more valuable, as well as meaningful, collection down the road.

You may also finding interesting pieces in antique shops, markets and consignment stores. Always keep your eyes open for artwork that appeals to you and do not be too concerned with the value. Art is always subject to individual interpretation and only you can decide if a piece is worthy of your investment.

Do enjoy immersing yourself in your art collecting. Whether it is simply an occasional hobby or becomes an ongoing passion, art is an extension of our imagination that is one of the few truly human pursuits - it fills no need other than emotional - and yet has an impact that intrigues and fulfills us like no other.

Fashion: Bring Back the Basics

By Harriet Hodgson

Merchandisers use sales to get customers to come into their stores. I just went to a department store sale and was very disappointed. The free coffee and cookies were a nice touch (I didn't eat them), as were the couches next to the coffee. But I was there to buy clothes for a trip and stayed on task.

What did I find? I found rack after rack of dirndl skirts, t-shirts, blouses, and shoes decorated with sequins. Clothing with sequins is hard to launder, let alone iron. The wild colors didn't appeal to me, either. Clearly, I wasn't up to date on fashion trends.

I'm not the only woman who thinks the latest fashions are "over the top." Fashion designers are missing a marketing opportunity when they neglect middle-aged women and seniors. I urge all fashion designers, where ever you may be, to think of women like me.

THINK ABOUT LAUNDRY. Dry cleaning costs are going through the roof and, after I've had a garment cleaned three times, I've paid for it again. I'm not the only woman looking for washable clothes. Friends are refusing to buy clothes that have to be dry cleaned, with the exception of rayon, which can be washed in cold water.

THINK ABOUT COLOR. Lime green may be in these days, but if I wear this color I look like I need a blood transfusion. Orange doesn't look any better on me. Besides, who wants to look like walking fruit? Years ago, navy blue was my travel color choice, but this color has almost disappeared.

THINK ABOUT SCALE. Many women don't look good in clothes that are printed with huge flowers, animals, or repeat designs. Large prints like these are out of scale for our height and weight. Please think about pattern scale when you're designing clothes for women.

THINK ABOUT BASICS. I don't want a dirndl skirt that makes me look like an escapee from an ethnic dance troupe. Admittedly, my fashion choices are influenced by the fact that I live in the Midwest. Midwesterners are practical and, while we like to look fashionable, we buy clothes that last for several seasons. We also buy clothes we can layer in case the weather changes.

THINK ABOUT ACCESSORIES. Retailers like Chico's and Coldwater Creek have gotten the back to basics message. These stores carry travel knits in black, brown, blue and other colors, with accessories to match. It's one stop shopping. The coordinated skirts, tops, and slacks are ideal for travel and home.

When I ask designers to get back to basics am I asking too much? I don't think so. Basic designs will result in more customers. Basic designs are adaptable and you can dress them up or down. Dear designer, please get back to clothing basics!

Boxer Shorts

By Josh Riverside

Boxer shorts are underwear made usually for men. They were dubbed “boxer shorts” because they were patterned from those worn by professional boxers.

Boxer shorts first appeared in the 1930s, but they weren’t so popular since men back then were so accustomed to briefs. It was only two decades later those boxer shorts gained a following. It needed one Nick Kaman to wear them in a popular jeans-brand outdoor billboard advertisement in the 1980s. Even though up to now, boxers are still not as popular as briefs, there is a swelling preference for boxers today.

Boxer shorts have certain advantages compared to other underwear. The majority of surveys say that women prefer seeing boxer shorts on men. The opening in front of the boxer shorts allows convenience for men when nature calls. There are also more patterns, styles, and colors available on boxer shorts as compared to briefs. They can also be taken off more easily. Doctors also say that the cool temperature allowed by wearing boxer shorts permits the production of more sperm in men. Boxer shorts cover more area than briefs.

On the other hand, critics of boxer shortsim there are certain disadvantages to wearing shorts as compared to other types of underwear. They feel that boxers don’t have the snug fit that briefs offer when you wear them, and that the penis may be exposed when you wear them without another layer of clothing. The genitals are not supported and tend to move around a lot, creating much discomfort when playing sports. The waistband can likewise irritate the skin (but this may also be true with briefs). Even with another layer of clothing, an erection is obvious when you wear boxers. Wearing certain kinds of pants over boxer shorts looks awkward. And lastly, the loose-fitting kind can move in awkward positions.

Boxers

By Josh Riverside

Boxers are very popular today, considering they have only been used during the last century. There is an unofficial debate over which is better, boxers and briefs, and so far, boxers seem to be winning. Read on to see why many men are switching to this comfortable underwear.

Boxers are said to present a more adventurous choice of design in today’s market, where personalization of items is a good marketing tool. It pervades even the world of art – the artist/ photographer Storm Thorgerson once featured a Boxer dog in designer boxers on a beach as part of his exhibit (which featured many other parodies of men and animals).

Many people regarded wearing boxers as taboo for a long time before they were finally accepted as definite alternative to briefs in the latter part of the twentieth century.

The popularity of boxer shorts has transcended more than the local tailor shop. As we have seen over the past few years, sports apparel companies that release underwear lines are already featuring boxer shorts, as it said to aid in the rigors of many sports ordeals. It seems that the era of jockstraps and supporters, which were prevalent only years ago, is gone. (Back then, men were advised to wear supporters that hug the genitals to provide protection.)

Results medical experiments also recommended boxer shorts, since they aid in airflow, avoiding the arrest of spermatogenesis. Brief-style underwear allegedly causes scrotal hyperthermia and can lead to clinical sub-fertility. How practical can wearing boxers get? Strong brief fans may argue otherwise, as these boxers may not be very helpful in hiding an erection or may cause uneasiness due to too much movement of the penis.

Boxer Briefs

By Josh Riverside

You may be among those who previously thought there are no differences between boxers and boxer briefs. You may even think that men used to wear only briefs and that the selection for undergarment designs are more suited for women than men. But times have changed, and men, too, are given the option to choose among several undergarment styles.

You can find an assortment of boxer briefs on the market today, from those with Spiderman prints to more conservative, clean-looking white ones. So why exactly do boxer briefs differ from any other underwear?

From the name boxer briefs, we can infer that this is a fusion of the boxer-type and brief-type underwear. Boxer briefs somehow resemble the cycling shorts worn by athletes or professional players. They cover more area, from the waist down up to the thighs, and feature the snug-fit characteristic of briefs. You can normally see this kind of underwear on mixed-martial artists and wrestlers.

This is the alternative for those individuals who don’t like the looseness of boxers but want more skin covered. This is not a new type of underwear, however, since its use has been traced back to as early as 1910. They are descended from the uniforms worn by horseback riders.

Most teenage Americans are showing preference for boxer shorts for their flexibility to be used during athletics as well as in everyday activities. The largely predominant R&B and Hip-hop culture may have an influence on them also, as Hip-hop and R&B artists are known to endorse the freer lifestyles that boxer shorts may connote.

Boxer briefs are also available in their knitted versions. They can also be worn as sleepwear. Since the point in selling underwear has shifted from comfort and durability to sexiness, boxer briefs are not as popular as g-strings. They are, however, the preferred and prescribed undergarments by religious institutions with strict standards, such as the Mormons who follow a strict doctrine that considers underwear as having religious significance.

Normal store prices for boxer briefs range from about $10 – $19.

What Colour Part 6: Blue

By Ivy Mills

Roses are red, violets are blue. Red gets a rose’s glory and, like the violet, blue shrinks into the background - literally. Red objects appear closer than others and blue objects appear farther away. Artists use this little trick to bring depth to their paintings.

The contrast between red and blue give the illusion of depth perception.

Being red’s antagonist, blue symbolizes relaxation, peace and tranquillity. Blue gives the illusion of credibility and professionalism, and so, became the most popular colour to be worn in court.

Blue can represent authority, business, security, stability and trust. It can also leave an stodgy, conservative and judicial feeling.

Blue helps us to communicate on an emotional level and get in touch with our feelings. Blue brings truth, loyalty, harmony and patience to the home.

Blue is a wonderful colour for a bedroom. It encourages rest and relaxation and makes time go by more quickly. Be careful to incorporate other colours as well though - an overdose of blue can lead to sadness and depression.

It also acts as an appetite suppressant - so you are better pre-pared to battle those midnight cravings. Too bad I painted my bedroom sunshine yellow! Maybe it’s time for a makeover...

Ivy Mills has been researching chemical sensitivity and natural alternatives for over five years and has brought her knowledge to the marketplace in her company, Valhalla Essences. Her personal experiences have fed a passion to help others with the same problem. Ivy welcomes others to share their stories and experiences on her blog, Peaceful Power.

The Best Men's Swimwear - From a Woman's Point of View

By Anne Clarke

This article is about the best men’s swimwear out there. Let me first say that I am a woman. Therefore, I am not judging the best men’s swimwear based on how comfortable it is, but on how appealing it is to any onlooker.

The "Speedo"

I swam on a swim team and played water polo in high school, so let me say that “speedos” have a special place in my heart. I love them! Let me rephrase that -- I love them only when they are being worn for sport. This sort of men’s swimwear was most definitely not made for simply hanging around on the beach.

Also, there is a certain way that a “speedo” should be worn. It must be worn low. In fact, the men who wear the “speedos” in the best possible way are California men. California men know how to wear their men’s swimwear – they wear their “speedos” super low and tight, and they usually reveal just a little bit of butt-crack. Pardon me for saying so, but “speedos” look great when worn this way, especially if the wearer has a swimmer’s body! “Speedos” should never be worn higher on the hips than they are in the middle – this is a horrible look and creates a bit of the “banana hammock” look.

Also, there are fantastic “speedos” out on the market now that are of a square shape rather than a U-shape. These square “speedos” look good on many body types.

Note: I have put the term “speedo” in quotes because “speedo” is actually just the brand – it is not the type of suit. Speedo makes suits for women, as well (this is similar to how we call tissue "Kleenex" and bandages "Band-Aids").

Surfing Shorts

Lace-up surfing shorts are a great sort of men’s swimwear. Practically any man can wear surfing shorts and look good, even if he is not out surfing. The long length of surfing shorts and the adjustable lace-up front make them ideal for most men. The only problem is that they do not allow a man’s thighs to ever see the sun, so his thighs remain white, all through the summer.

Tip: Yes, super low surfing shorts can look very sexy, but do not wear them obscenely low. Also, do not wear them so low that you must also wear your underwear beneath them. Nobody wants to see your underwear hanging out of your suit! Besides, wet cotton briefs boxers are very uncomfortable and take a long time to dry.

Swim Trunks

As far as men’s swimwear goes, swim trunks are the most basic sort of swimwear. This does not mean that swim trunks are not great men’s swimwear. Men of any age can wear swim trunks, from young boys to old men. Swim trunks are great because they usually have a lining so that they are very comfortable and less revealing. Many swim trunks have elastic or drawstring waists, so they are easy to put on and to adjust. Also, swim trunks are a good length – they are not too terribly short, but you can still tan your legs. They are not too terribly long – you can still swim laps around the pool and be comfortable in them.

The Thong

All that I have to say about the thong is -- do not wear one! A thong should not even be included as an article of men’s swimwear.

Men's Bathing Suits

By Jimmy Sturo

Buying the right size, style and material for bathing suits is important, especially if you are a professional swimmer. There is a wide range of men’s bathing suits to choose from, so it takes a little time to figure out the right type of bathing suit. Here are a few guidelines that may be able to help you decide what type of bathing suit would match your style and needs.

Before measuring yourself, don’t forget to remove all your outer clothing. Stand in front of the mirror and make sure the measuring tape is not twisted. The tape should be secure but not too tight. Since the size of most men’s bathing suits is based on waist measurement, you need to get this right. In order to do this, bend to one side to find your natural waistline. Then while standing straight, measure your waistline just above the hipbone or about an inch below your natural waistline. This should verify the right waist size before buying a bathing suit.

Decide carefully what type of bathing suit would be appropriate for your needs. For example, if you’re into some serious water sports like surfing, get some board shorts. If you can afford it, try to go for high-quality sanded polyester coated with water repellent. The board shorts should also have reinforced stitching along seams and stress points.

If you’re a competitive swimmer, high-performance bathing suits, with blends of nylon or spandex, such as Speedos and tight-fitting briefs, maximize speed in the water and improve glide times. For training, buy your normal size, but for competitions, buy a bathing suit at least one size smaller than your training suit. Also make sure the suit is equipped with flat and locked stitches in order to prevent drag and skin chaffing in the groin.

Men’s bathing suits, like women’s, are also available in various styles, designs and types though options are generally uniform in comparison.

Speedo, actually a swimsuit brand name, may be the most popular bathing suit for men. The name is now used as a generic term for any briefs-style male swimsuit. Speedos can be identified by the V-shape feature in the front and form-fitting solid back, and are mostly made of Lycra or spandex composite. They are typically worn below the lower waist, and are secured by a drawstring and thin banding at the upper thighs.

Board shorts are basically half length pants but normally longer than briefs, shorts, or Speedos styles. They may also have a baggy appearance and typically extends to the knee area or a little above it. They are popular, but not exclusively, for water sports such as surfing and wakeboarding. Maybe that’s why they are called board shorts. The skater punk fashion of the 1990s and 2000s has also immensely popularized these pants.

Jammers are normally worn by professional swimmers which enable them to gain speed advantages because of its Lycra or spandex composite. They extend from the mid-waist to the area above the knee and have more water resistance than other types of men’s swimwear.

Briefs are normally meant for men’s underwear but they can also be used for bathing suits too. The reason behind the popularity of briefs lies in their practicality, which offers an almost parallel degree of support from jockstraps. So, many people find it comfortable to swim with briefs as bathing suits.

With many bathing suits to choose from in the market, it’s worth taking the time to find the right style and size for you; a little time spent choosing will give you a lot of good use and enjoyment from your new bathing suit.

Adding A Touch Of Fashion To Your Life

By Robert Brand

Fashion is a simple concept. You dress yourself and your home in clothes and accessories that are ‘in’. By using the trendy brands and designers out there, you may think it is quite easy to do this though. In fact, in order to add fashion to your life you need to know a thing or two about it. Sure, you could go out and just purchase items that you like and that have a highly recognizable brand to them, but if you do not combine items in the right way, you could be a walking disaster. But, then again, not all of us have been schooled in knowing what fashion is and what disaster is.

Besides taking fashion courses, you can learn a lot about fashion right online. No need to purchase all of those trendy magazines if you can find answers right online, right? Honestly, look for the things that you like the most. For example, do you like how colors work together? Do you enjoy patterns? Do you like to be comfortable or are you willing to forgo this for high style? By using the styles and patterns you enjoy the most, you are sure to create a look that is truly your own, in a good way.

To keep fashion within a budget, look for your favorite designer and then find pieces that have the same texture and cut that are not name branded. Because they will look like that of the high priced designer they will still give you the high fashion sense that you are looking for with a much smaller expense. You can find similar looking pieces everywhere so this is not necessarily a difficult process.

You can add fashion to your home by taking the same concepts that you enjoy using with your outfits and using it in your home. By using the same fabrics, colors, and styles, you can take an average, dull looking home and make it something fabulous and definitely worth sharing.

No matter what you do, adding fashion to your life can be a great way to add a sense of life and style to your everyday existence. If looking good is a quality that you want then you can find it when you look for ways to add fashion into your life. You’ll be surprised at how easily you can do this! Since most of us are on a limited budget, you’ll see that finding unique pieces that fit within your life that are not weighted down with designer labels are out there as well. Fashion can be your friend if you give it a chance.

The Origin of Underwear

The Unofficial Gentleman's Guide to the History of Classic Skivvies

A man's merit is largely determined by the clothes he wears. So, logically, a man's undergarments provides the necessary foundation for his outward appearance.

A history lesson...

Underwear, apparently, reflects our society. One can only guess what ancient people wore under their robes and tunics. Throughout early Greece, Rome and Egypt, one rule held: the higher your status in society, the more clothes you wore. Slaves often wore nothing at all. The status-conscious Victorians took underwear to fussy extremes of modesty and functionality. It was the era in which underwear became an "unmentionable" and the term "lingerie" came into use.

Men's underwear has not always been a fashion statement. Any kind of undergarment that did not bulge, sag, chafe, gap, bind or shrink in the wash was deemed adequate enough. A man's needs were generally simpler then, and the classic long-handles with the posterior two-button flap were worn just about anywhere except blatantly out in public. Well, in reference to the modern-day boxer short, have times really changed so dramatically?

Ancient Beginnings

Would it be so wrong to assume that Adam's legendary fig leaf was the first article of underwear? YES! Why? Well, mostly because it didn't go under anything. The precise origin of men's undergarments is very difficult to pinpoint. One thing is certain: the male anatomy has always served as the blueprint for the design of his underclothes. Specially fabricated for the contours of the body and made of resistant, washable fabrics, men's underwear has always been chiefly practical rather than decorative.

Approximately 5,341 years ago, loin cloths were a common sight. Some mountaineers hiking through the Tyrolean alps in 1991 stumbled upon the frozen corpse of a man believed to be from that era. Among the tattered remains of his clothing was a leather loincloth. The loincloth is without a doubt the primary antecedent to contemporary underwear. Even as recently as World War II, the loincloth had enjoyed continued popularity among the Japanese, who wore something similar under their uniforms.

Men's underwear, like many of today's products and technologies, was greatly improved during the course of both World Wars. WWI introduced to soldiers the first shorts with buttons on a yoke. Years later, adjustable tie-side shorts were issued to WWII troops for summer wear. These two types of undergarments were so popular that returning soldiers continued wearing them. Plus, the war years spawned the introduction of new fabrics, such as rayon, to complement cotton. Much of this all but replaced the union suits that entire families wore from ankles to wrists.

Towards 1920, however, convenience and comfort were getting more emphasis. New designs with less buttons and easier accessibility mushroomed during this time period. Some early woven cloth union suits had open crotches, for obvious hygiene reasons, held with buttons. Soon after came the various closed crotch designs: some simply draped over the buttocks and stayed loosely closed due to fabric overlap, others sported a d-shaped flap down the rear crotch seam with a single button to keep it closed.

With the advent of the 20's, young men who were keen on dancing most likely wore underwear made of sturdy nainsook, a new woven cotton fabric. At the same time, many men and boys were still wearing various union suits. Correct sizing was determined through the measurements of the chest, waist and trunk(a circular measurement over the shoulder and under the crotch).

By the 1930's, a Vermont-based factory named Cooper's Inc. patented a y-front man's undergarment with overlapping fly. Available in both long and short length knitted drawers, these briefs -- as they're so called today - were introduced under the Jockey trademark. Soon enough, gentlemen everywhere were being advised to shop only at stores that displayed the Jockey statue in the window or at the counter.

Introduced in Chicago in 1935, the Jockey brief sold 600 packages on a day in which one of the worst blizzards of the winter was hitting the city. Thirty thousand pairs were sold in the next three months, a precursor to its enduring popularity that thrives to this day.

Elsewhere in the world of drawers, someone decided to eliminate all the buttons and put in a waist-encircling elastic band, similar to the shorts worn by prize-fighters. Hence, the boxer short emerged and has since enjoyed a massive popularity.

Near the middle of the 20th century, electric knitting machines replaced water-powered equipment to produce more underwear at a vastly quicker pace. During this era of WWII, American troops discovered that the freshly washed white underwear that they hung out to dry attracted enemy fire. A wartime ad for Jockey headlined: "Target: White Underwear" and explained why the armed forces switched from white underwear to OD(Olive Drab), because the latter color blends in with its surroundings more effectively. But more changes were afoot in the underwear business after the war….

Manufacturers of men's undergarments started putting more and more emphasis on their respective brands' recognition, each with their own special little feature to entice prospective purchasers. Bauer & Black urged men to "avoid midsection sag" with its "Bracer", made of two-way stretch latex. Hanes had "Givvies", made from bias cut broadcloth that "gave" with every movement. Healthknit paired MacDee bottoms with matching Kut-Ups shirts, which had an inverted V-notch to fit snugly around the brief's pouch with the shirt tucked in. Perhaps the most noteworthy of them all were the briefs with the naughty name "Reis Scandals". This was to be underwear's coming of age, to finally be associated with sex appeal.

With the dawn of the 1950's - along with the end of the war shortages - boxer shorts and briefs were flying off the shelves and puritanical white underwear was overshadowed by a variety of colors and patterns. Manufacturers were experimenting with rayon, Dacron, and the new DuPont nylon during this time, although cotton remained the main constituent.

At the beginning of the last century, whole one-piece union suits cost $1.00 each. For over 50 years, the price of men's underwear remained at $1.00 or less, per garment. Then in the 60's, the prices started to creep up. Jockey was selling its Super Briefs for $1.50. Other brands followed the example, and it's been an upward trend in pricing ever since.

Underwear is a fashion mainstay today. All manner of bikinis, briefs, thongs, strings, boxers and jockstraps are available for the modern man's tastes and preferences. The vast majority of brands employ young, lean, nearly nude male models as their selling point. Calvin Klein, Sauvage, DIM, Punto Blanco, Tommy Hilfiger, Jockey, JM, HOM and a myriad of others post their sex-drenched ads in magazines and on billboards everywhere. Today, sex sells just about anything, and it would be more than safe to assume that it all originated with our society's embracing of underwear.
